Voice At The End Of The Line (M Ward)
From "Transfiguration of Vincent"
Posted and transcribed by Chogdog
This is transcribed for guitar although the song is in piano. I did
the bridge fairly quickly and the C chord before the Bflat minor
doesn’t sound exactly right but it passable.
The B minor flat 5 can also be played as B diminished. It sound OK
either way. I play the Bminor-5 like this
E-x--
B-3--
G-4--
B-3--
A-2--
E-X—
Or the B diminished like
E-x--
B-3--
G-1--
B-3--
A-2--
E-X—
If (F)all I had (Dm7)was just (Bb)one final (C)call
Would you(F)answer my(Dm7)ring
Would you (Bb)hear it at(C)all
Oh and(F)I spend my (F7)life
trying to(Bb)make someone (Bm-5)mine
And (F)now all I want is(C) voice at the end of the(F) line
And I (F) lost my(Dm7)life In an (Bb)unlucky(C)bed
Could you(F)clear my (Dm7) name
Could you(Bb)cancel my(C) debt
Oh and(F)I’ve spent my (F7) life
Trying to (Bb)make up my (Bm-5)mind
And(F)now all I want is a(C)voice at the end of the(F)line
I’ve spent(Bb)way too much time in(F7)side myself
I don’t (Dm)know what I was(C)thinking (Bbm)about
Oh and(F)deep in my mind I am (C)dialing your number (F)now.

This sort of is the intro (the bar measures may not be correct)
This is the finger picking pattern on the C
to C with bflat in bass to Am7. On the second time, he doesn’t play
the added d note during the Am7. The Gm played just preceding this
part is played as a bar on the third fret- 355333
F)Hey I aint (Bb)never met anyone like (F)you
before
I ain’t (Bb)never met anyone like (F)you before
I though (Bb)all the (C)good ones were(F) gone
You’re here to (Bb)tell me (C) I was wrong
(F)Hey you aint (Bb)never met a fool like(F)me before
you aint (Bb)never met a fool like(F) me before
They told (Bb) all romantic fools have (F) died
I’m here to (Bb)tell you (c)that the lied
(Gm)You can’t be always right my friend
C’mon and (C)tell me (C/Bb)I’ve got it (Am7)wrong again
Hey I aint never seen anything like this before
I ain’t never seen anything like this before
I thought all the mystery was gone
You’re here to tell me I was wrong
Instrumental break same chords as verse. Can play an Fmaj7 over these
chords to imitate electric guitar
(Gm)You can’t be always right my friend
C’mon and (C)tell me (C/Bb)I’ve got it (Am7)wrong again
Hey you aint never met a fool like me before
you aint never met a fool like me before
They told all romantic fools have died
I’m here to tell you that I lied (F6)
This is the lead lick he plays right at the end that gives the F6
sound to it.

**This song is in drop D. I figured it out using standard
chords though. I believe these are the chords in drop D:
D = 000232
Em = 222000
A = x02220
G = 50543
F#m = 444222
[D]My heart is always on the line
I've travelled all kinds of [Em]places
The song is always the [A]same
Got lonesome for [D]fire
[D]Got 45's to play at night
Got books to spend with every [Em]weekend
The stories always the [A]same
Got lonesome fuel for [D]fire
Fuel for [G]fire
and bitter [F#m]ending
to a [Em]sweet [A]sweet [D]day
Fuel for [G]fire
the sour [F#m]note inside me
[Em]orch[A]estral [D]way
Fuel for [G]fire
and uncomfortable [F#m]pauses
between [Em]famous [A]last [D]words
Fuel for [G]fire
and missing [F#m]persons
in a [Em]small [A]small [D]world
[D]I've dugged beneath the wall of sound
I ended up back where I [Em]started
the song is always the [A]same
Got lonesome fuel for [D]fire
[D]And so my heart is always on the line
I've travelled all kinds of [Em]places
The story's always the [A]same
Got lonesome fuel for [D]fire

This is the song transcribed out in tab form. The song just repeats
what I have tabbed over a few times in this exact order so the chorus
is the same as the intro. Starting at the bar 7 I believe he begins
strumming a second guitar and I have noted the chords over the low E
string. Also starting at bar seven you can play a low G on the E
string along with the fingerpicking parts if you wish (except the
parts where he is playing the other chords) and this sounds better if
you’re playing without accompaniment. Also in the intro at the end
of each bar instead of playing what I have tabbed as the eigth note a
lot of time he just does a brief slide. You can play it how you like.
Any corrections welcome. I have also annotated where he starts sings
the first verse.

(G)Have you ever been alone in the nighttime
And you’re thinking that you just don’t know
And that feeling (C)grows
Without con(G)trol
And you (Am7)thinking about a place to(D7)go
But your(Am7)body tells you stay at (D7)home
It’s involuntary
When the phone has lost its bells
And the doorbell lost its sound
You’re only hearing your heart pound
It’s involuntary
And have you ever tried to leave at the right time
But the right time seems to come so slow
And that feeling grows
Without control
And you thinking about a place to go
But your body tells you stay at home
It’s involuntary
When the phone has lost its bells
And the doorbell lost its sound
You’re only hearing your heart pound
It’s involuntary

Play the C#m chord with alternating bass notes as per the tab and a
lot of palm muting throughout the song.

[C#m]Let's dance, put on your red shoes and [F#m11] dance the blues
[C#m]Let's dance, to the song they're playin' on the [F#m11]radio
[C#m]Let's sway, while colour lights up your [F#m11]face
[C#m]Let's sway, sway through the crowd to an empty [F#m11]space
[A] If you say run, I'll [D] run with you[E][D][E]
[A]And if you say hide, we'll [D]hide[E][D][E]
[A]Because my love for [Amaj7]you
[F#m]Would break my heart in [E]two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower[A][Asus2][A][Asus2]
Harmonica:
[C#m][F#m11][C#m][F#m11][C#m][F#m11][C#m][F#m11]
Let's dance, for fear your grace should fall
Let's dance, for fear tonight is all
Let's sway, you could look into my eyes
Let's sway, under the moonlight, this serious moonlight
[A] If you say run, I'll [D] run with you[E][D][E]
[A]And if you say hide, we'll [D]hide[E][D][E]
[A]Because my love for [Amaj7]you
[F#m]Would break my heart in [E]two
If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower[A][Asus2][A][Asus2]
[E]If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower[A][Asus2][A][Asus2]
[no chord]If you should fall
Into my arms
And tremble like a flower[A][Asus2]
